Surveying the Scene written by Maud Sulter 1987
This is the most thorough career survey of a Black woman artist based in Britain.
Given that Black women have an active history in these Isles since the 15th century and an unrecorded past beyond that, it is a searing indictment of the racism and sexism of the Arts in particular and the society in general.
The show does not stand in isolation. Its roots are in the collective Black struggle of our history. Where triumphs are seldom written but riot and rebellion recorded yet still misnamed. Under attack we will fight back.
We will remember those who are seen to die at the hands of the state but also bear witness and will testify the lives and the deaths of so many others whose lives touch ours. The warrior takes many guises. The educator uses many tools.
